Farm & Country
Longhill Farmhouse is a Grade II listed family home set on a non working farm on the outskirts of Ditcheat, a small & picturesque village in the Somerset countryside, within easy reach of Castle Cary, Shepton Mallet, Wells and Glastonbury. We are surrounded by beautiful views of farmland and the Creech Hills, and our home is a non smoking tranquil place for those seking peace, quiet and relaxation.
Longhill Farmhouse is a house of two halves! The original side is Georgian in style, being built in the 1760’s and mainly comprises private family accommodation. The second half was built a hundred years later in the 1860’s, during the Victorian period and houses our bed and breakfast accommodation. The two-feet thick exterior walls of the original building can be seen mainly throughout the private family quarters as exposed interior stone walls and gothic shaped windows, adding much character and rustic charm to a warm and friendly family home.
The Dyke family first came to the house in 1916, and it has remained in the family ever since. Neville is the current member of the Dyke family to live at Longhill, and being a local ‘lad’, and having lived in Ditcheat all his life, he has extensive knowledge of the area and its offerings. Neville farmed at Longhill for many years and looked after a large dairy herd of Fresians until 1999. Neville’s extended family also live in Ditcheat and his son’s live very near by in the village of Alhampton. Since his marriage in 2008, Neville is now joined by his wife, Gail, in the family business. Gail practiced as anurse and midwife in her former career, but hasnow turned her full attention to the running of the bed and breakfast business.
During 2006, Longhill was tastefully updated and refurbished to ensure a very warm welcome in comfortable, relaxing surroundings. The old tractor shed was completely demolished in 2009 to make way for our new holiday cottage which provides a luxurious standard of self catering accommodation.
